Can a power station run a gas furnace?

Short answer: a gas furnace still needs electricity for its blower. A 1/2 HP blower needs about 3,150 W surge and 800 W running (chart values). Many stations can start it, but runtime in a cold snap is measured in hours, not days.

The math

Runtime (hours) = battery Wh × 0.85 ÷ (running W × cycling %). The cycling % values (25/50/75%) are estimates for mild, cold and very cold days, not measured data. Example: 2,048 Wh, 1/2 HP blower at 50% = 2,048 × 0.85 ÷ (800 × 0.5) = 4.4 h.

FAQ

Can a power station run a gas furnace?

A gas furnace needs electricity for its blower and controls. The LIFAN chart lists a 1/3 HP furnace blower at 700 W running plus 1,400 W starting (2,100 W peak), and a 1/2 HP blower at 800 W plus 2,350 W (3,150 W peak). A station with enough surge can run it, but most furnaces are hard-wired, so you need an electrician-installed inlet or transfer switch.

How long will a power station run a furnace blower?

It depends on how much the furnace cycles, which depends on outdoor temperature and insulation. At an estimated 50% cycling, a 1/2 HP blower uses about 9,600 Wh per day, so a 2,048 Wh station lasts about 4.4 hours.

Can I plug my furnace into a power station with an extension cord?

Only if the furnace has a factory cord-and-plug connection. Hard-wired furnaces need a licensed electrician to install a transfer switch or power inlet. Never backfeed a house through an outlet.
